On Monday, I spoke about how laziness was a factor that stifled my progress, and maybe yours. Here it is again, in case you missed it:

Make Money Online - Excuses Part 1, Are You Just Plain Lazy?

Deluded, I used illusions of limiting self-belief to explain it away, when in fact, by putting effort into a few simple steps, I was able to learn and achieve much more.

There’s another group of individuals who aspire to make money online. No doubt about it - they are commited to the cause and spend a huge amount of time trawling the Internet for information and nuggets of wisdom that could possibly push their results through a common barrier. Sounds like many of us, doesn’t it?

Anyone could be in or was from this group. I was. Sometimes I still fall into the pit. It’s not because I spend a lot of time looking for tips and methods. Nor is it because I struggle to make any money. I don’t make enough, yet.

It’s because sometimes I still have doubts over what I learn, read or hear about, from someone who has actually shown results. I am suspicious of what he or she shares with me, no matter how little, how much or how true it is. Of course, if I have to part with some cash, it makes things worse. But even when it’s free, unsolicited information, the suspicions are still strong.

Let’s say the shared knowledge comes free. Would it actually hurt you to try it? Does it make us look silly if we do, whether any results are forthcoming? How would you know for sure anyway, if it’s the truth or bollocks? Especially if all you have to bank on in the first place are doubts.

I doubted many products that wanted my money and left them alone. Then, I proceeded to doubt what I read from blogs, free reports and all. Sure, a lot of them were sketchy and skim only the surface (and as a defence, that contributes to why most people are cynical in the first place). But at the end of the day, I spent more time and money burning my bum on seats still looking and questioning, rather than throwing all that cynicism out the window and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t.

Doubt and cynicism help to keep you on your toes and protect you from scams. But think about it. What doesn’t work for someone, might work for you. Anything that works for you, with the wrong application, won’t work for anyone else. If we persist in doubting, would we ever learn what turns our world? Rather than worry about what would hurt us, why not test them?

My next post could perhaps shed some light on why many of us ended up this way. But before then, I found it more productive to try first, and maybe doubt later. And that’s only after I’ve made an honest attempt to test things thoroughly. I realised that it really didn’t hurt to try, except spending some of my time.

As an example, let’s use the Voxant Newsroom that I mentioned a while back because of Mike’s blog. The first thing that came to mind when I saw Mike’s results was “So, tell me, do they even pay you really?”. I still ask Mike and am waiting for him to let me know, but in the meantime, I got off my behind and used it. Along the way, I thought of other ways to do so and built them on the fundamental key of high traffic sites. I’m seeing better results the last couple of days with about $6 gained from an earning model based on impressions (I still haven’t reached traffic figures like Mike’s blog that uses the Newsroom, where it’s most effective on those). Imagine if I had continued doubting, and waited for a tangible proof of payment before implementing it. That’s $6 of potential earnings lost. $6 doesn’t make you rich, but it would cover 2 meals on the go (at least here in Singapore). And did it really hurt me in embedding those news feeds on my sites? I don’t see how it might have. The opportunity cost would have been other ad revenue from the space used, but at the moment I couldn’t find any other suitable programs to use.

And let’s face it, bu.bulicio.us uses it. So again, why not?

Don’t think too much, go try things out! As Mike is fond of saying, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Get back to me once you’ve had a proper taste.
