Fancy being a bestselling author? Or you just need to write that ebook that will sell and make you money online? Do you know how?
It is not difficult really. Banking on a lifetime of reading and always looking out for the top-selling books, here are some ideas for you to get started. Most of these are slightly more applicable to non-fiction, but seriously, you never know when to separate reality from fantasy. Remember, you do not need originality to sell. You just need to write for the masses.
1. Talk about your life story or lifestyle. You do not need to be famous (read the other tips below) - you just need to have a life that readers can identify with or aspire to.
2. Talk about a hard luck story growing up. It can be yours, or it can be others. Or it can simply be something made up. Rags to riches stories are filled with characters who always seem to have the same sort of family (tough dad, supporting mom, living from hand-to-mouth) and same issues growing up (lack of confidence before blossoming). Then tell your readers that if you can do it, so can they.
3. Add further dimensions to your hard luck story. Tell them you were made a bankrupt, but now you are raking in the dough. If you can do it, so can they.
4. Always write that you were from humble beginnings, even if you may be an arrogant prick now. Sports and entertainment stars are great at this. Read those.
5. Allude to the working class and how you broke free. That’s one huge potential customer base there already.
6. Everyone wants to live a happier and better existence. Tell them that the mind is a powerful tool. It changed your life just by thinking about all the positive things in the world.
7. Create several follow-ups and keep telling them the same thing - the mind can change your life if you keep repeating to yourself what you want.
8. A surefire way to create a bestselling series - collect all the How-To advice (e.g. self-improvement, or tips and tricks of any kind) and package them into several parts.
9. Start small, think big. Work on a self-improvement book on a certain area or niche. If that sells, simply reproduce the same book but in a different area or niche.
10. Just about everyone craves for companionship… or sex. Write about dating and relationship advice. For men AND women.
11. Make sure you add controversy, sex or drugs whenever possible. Dashes of experience that the man on the street cannot have, they desire to read.
12. Write about women issues. For both women AND men.
13. There are some stuff that are so obvious and readily available that you wonder how they sell. There are hardly any secrets in the world. Yet you see bestsellers like “What To Expect, When You Are Expecting” by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway, and you still have that 5 minutes of fame somewhere round the corner.
14. Tell people how to make money. In broad general terms. They always want more. Remember how money creates more money. Only now, you are writing about it. Make sure to include the fine print that what works for you, will not necessarily apply to them.
15. Tell people how to make money. And stress to them you are sharing your methods because of a kind heart and generous soul.
16. Make sure you have a gang of successful or semi-successful buddies to tell the rest of the world how great your book is. Or how it helped them become who they are today (even when they are more successful than you are). It does not matter if they have read it or not.
17. Finally, bestseller writing tip of the day - write magical tales of love and adventure for children, then reveal all the dark closet secrets of the characters once the series is completed. Afterall, it’s all about love.
There are many more, but the above angles usually work. Write for a need, not what you want. Satisfy your ego by layering a personal spin on things. Hundreds and thousands of authors have done it online. Why not you? It might be YOUR turn to be Cinderella.

1It seems bestsellers are always on the same topic. And each generation puts their own flavor on how the topic is covered. Great post.

4@ Stephan - Thanks! I guess it’s the personal spin that continues to make them bestsellers!
@ David - I’m not sure yet - perhaps we could work together on a bestseller?
@ Z - Well, that’s another idea for another new post - I’ll look into it :)
