Darren posted this news yesterday and judging from others’ comments, the majority seem to feel it is a bad move by Google, that their publisher earnings will drop and perhaps it is time to drop AdSense. Since I still think AdSense is a viable earning program for publishers if done right, my advice is to think long term and consider the possible benefits of the move.

When I first saw the news, my immediate thoughts were “Oh that just makes it harder for me to hit the monthly minimum payout”. Yes, I am not a major AdSense publisher and I still struggle to attain the limit. You will not see me claiming to collect $250,000 paychecks from Google every month. But when it comes to contextual advertising with a broad range, admittedly I have yet to see a better system than Google’s. So I would use it as long as they still want me. :)

From my point of view, it really should not make much difference. As an advertiser, you rightly only want people to click on relevant ads, and the best way to do so is by clicking the titles, descriptions or URLs clearly.

If you are depending on accidental clicks on white space of ads, then there is something seriously wrong. There is an inter-dependent relationship between publishers and advertisers. Both rely on the other for revenue. Being a publisher, I would prefer that advertisers get value for dollars spent, which in turn would encourage them to invest more in this area. If I was an advertiser and had to pay for such clicks whether they could be determined or not, I would have second thoughts spending on this system.

Obviously Google is trying to tighten up the system. There is so much money in it that finding ways to build trust between all parties would be beneficial in the long run. Many of us might find our CTRs and earnings dipping with this coming into effect, but it should be for the short term. Certainly it would encourage us to work harder on other legitimate methods to increase CTR, instead of relying on just one form of income or even worse, other people’s mistakes.
