There are many people who dive straight into Internet Marketing without any prior knowledge of IT or even the Internet. When they decide to look for a web hosting package, they end up being confused by the number of choices and technicalities. If you are one of them, I hope to ease your difficulties with this article.
Before you start searching, first, ask yourself what you are looking for in your web hosting plan to achieve your Internet business aims? Knowing what you want in your end result will help in your planning and decision-making when filtering out the various plans available from the hundreds and thousands of web hosting companies out there.
Begin by looking at what your site and business requirements are, both in the short and long term. You would not want poor planning to result in a common painful experience of changing web hosts when you realise the current one does not fit the bill.
Here is a basic checklist of what you can look out for in planning and deciding on your web hosting choices:
1. What is the minimum length of time you are set on working on this online business? How much do you anticipate it to grow in the next 5 years?
2. What is the extent of reliability you require in your business, in terms of up and downtime? Some businesses allow or do not mind downtime during certain periods, but most others would not tolerate this. Your web hosting plan should cater to your business demands. This is the Internet, afterall!
3. How much space do you require now, and also for your future expansion plans?
4. How much traffic do you expect to receive? How much traffic do you aim to achieve?
5. Following from that, what would be the required bandwidth to accomodate this traffic and can the web hosting plan cope with this demand?
6. What is the nature of your business? If you have an online mall, the transactional demands will require that you have a web host that can handle intensive usage. If your site is simply a niche blog, then hosting your site with other web hosting packages might be sufficient.
7. How much multimedia support does your website require? Graphics and videos, if necessary, take up more space and bandwidth.
8. The customer service afforded to your clients. As a result, your web hosting company should at least provide a similar extent of service, not least to yourself. If you offer 24/7 support to your clients, it would be disastrous if you had to inform them that you could not solve a problem due to your web host not being able to entertain any support calls on your part.
The above would be a useful checklist to start with in your search for a good web host. Readers who know of additional pointers that should be considered, feel free to add your comments to this post!
