In my last post, I briefly mentioned dating affiliate programs and why they are good revenue sources despite a saturated niche. It is because the human demand for companionship and sex will always be present, and it is a demand that can seldom be satisfied.

This is where you can sometimes learn from other areas like psychology and sociology. By understanding the psychological needs or wants of people, you gain insight into what drives others to do things or become what they are. But most importantly for us, you will know what they are looking for - so much so that they are willing to pay for it.

There is no need to be an expert or scholar in these fields to gather knowledge of others’ desires. Apart from actually studying it, you can find out more by simply looking at bestsellers, or even perusing the various social media networks on popular topics. Or you can also leverage on tools to gather hot search topics of search engines.

By studying these needs, you can either look for products or create your own, to match them. If it can be addressed, you are likely to have a potential and satisfied client.

As an addition to this post, I will look at some of these needs or desires borne from human nature, and hope they can serve as a source of niche ideas.

1. Companionship
Most of us dread being alone, or need to constantly communicate with another human being on various levels. At an even basal level you have the desire to procreate. It is human instinct. That is why till this day, dating and adult sites are generally still popular. The only thing here is personal principle and ethics. If you decide that you need feeding more than ethics, by all means explore it further.

2. Happiness
This is actually quite broad. In truth, satisfying any of the other needs would include being happy or contentment. If we look at a desire to not be upset, angry or otherwise be in a joyful mood, humor or comedy can be a great source of hope. I have often spent light moments on comedy sites or films to provide some relief during stressful times. While I still cannot figure out how to monetize this channel, it is certainly popular.

3. Health
Without health, you invariably find ability to work at a premium. In fact, if you aren’t pink, it is hard to do most things. With humans’ neverending search for an elixir of life, it leads corporations worldwide to spend millions and billions of dollars on health research, to create products that would solve humanity’s ills (ok, to make them rich, really). The oft-said cliche “It is not important to be rich, but to be healthy” actually means “You can’t be rich and enjoy it, if you are not healthy”.

4. Belong
Have you ever been to South Korea or Japan and seen that, despite the many sub-cultures, just about every young person belongs to one? Did you know that South Koreans are also famous for being quick to jump on any trend or fad, especially if a famous figure is seen to endorse it? Humans are not programmed by society to be different, but to belong and conform. We are taught since young to fall in line, not to do drugs despite the tons of Canadians who have proven that marijuana doesn’t make them dumb, and that talking about sex is taboo even when the human species needs it to survive. If you do these, you will be an outcast and a rebel, and people won’t like you. But when you tell consumers that to be cool, you need an iPod, even though there are other MP3 players which provide better sound quality, hordes will queue to throw obscene amounts of money for one.

5. Improvement or Development
Most people will not settle for second best, being ordinary or in a state of mediocrity. Self improvement or personal development has been the message drummed in to millions of people worldwide. In order to get a better job, more dates, not be afraid of public speaking, have a mind that will easily transform your thoughts into action… you get the idea. If you have something that can improve someone or make them feel better about themselves, it would be a potential goldmine you are sitting on.

6. Poverty
I did not want to sound too obvious - but many people want to be rich, and have a thirst for money that cannot be satiated. That is why you have so many make money blogs - like this one. :) And even more scams out there that strangely seem to prosper.

7. Beauty
You only need to look at what many women spend their money on to understand this. With the advent of metrosexuality, even men are getting in on the act. Personally I have even spent money on facial products to ensure I still look a youthful 16 even though I am closer to half a man’s average life-span. To understand the power of this need (and co-rooted in the desire to belong), witness the regularity of South Korean women who opt for plastic surgery. Many of their parents even put aside money early on just in case their children need it.

The above are just 7 desires of human nature that I chose to elaborate on. Through observation, you can identify more on which to learn and understand in greater depth. Ultimately you have to give people what they want in order to receive something in return. And in order to do that, you have to know what they want.
