While building my Adsense empire, I have been listening to what Adsense Annie had to teach us on this area. Annie was once in the army and never dreamt about making a fortune, much less doing it online. Years later she got out and unfortunately, experienced a condition (RSI - repetitive stress injury) in 2001 that hurt her hands whenever she typed. Far from letting it get her down, she did some research and soul-searching, and decided on making a living working from home. After experimenting with Ebay and the sorts, she chanced upon Adsense and got down to making her first website monetized with it. Note that she still had to do these with her hands despite using voice recognition applications for certain limited areas.
She made only $2.17 from that first site, but short of being discouraged, was inspired to put in more effort through much experimentation. There was enough progress such that when she left school in 2005, she was earning a full time income from her part time hobby! Today, she makes a nice living from Adsense, which accounts for 90% of her income.
Have you noticed, like me, that people who have made it often never dreamt about it in the beginning? :)
Adsense Annie puts out about 2 podcasts per month. In case you’re thinking that’s too little too long, those podcasts can go as long as 20 mins with tons of clear and concise information. So far you have topics like:
I listed these two as Maura had a question on it in one of my earlier posts. I thought it would be helpful to listen to what Annie had to say from her (richer) experience before I came up with mine later on.
There are a total of 4 podcasts so far - the blog is pretty new at only less than 2 months old. The latest just came out a couple of days ago so head right there to check it out. I think there’s something for everyone there, whether you’re new to Adsense or pulling in your fair share of loaded piggybanks. While I wouldn’t recommend everyone depend on Adsense for a major slice of their online income like Annie does, it is a great and easy revenue source once you’ve optimised it for your sites. I’d hate to sound pro-Google especially with the growing anti-sentiment recently and after my recent discussion. But once again, if you want to make money online, and have a site that complies with their TOS, experiment with Adsense and you might benefit from it. Do that through learning with Adsense Annie.

2Hi YC,
Thanks so much for the nice write up!
Yeah, it can be hard to love Google at times ( I wasn’t affected by their recent PageRank manipulations, but I have read of lots of bloggers who were ), but a lot of what I talk about in my show can be applied to making money displaying any time of PPC or even CPM advertising. I personally run Chitika and a few others (less prominently), though as long as the Adsense gravy train is doing well for me, I’m gonna keep riding it. :)

3Blogging was definitely the last thing in my mind to make some money. I had a marketing project about blogging last year and today I’m experimenting on it to make it officially a passive income for me.

5@ Annie - You’re most welcome! I found your podcasts incredibly enthralling despite you sounding like you just woke up in bits lol ;) I’ve thought of applying the same principles/methods to other ad networks and am doing some ’split testing’ although I am facing some problems with my niche selections as a few of those are locally based and only Adsense serves up related ads. Will keep trying. Thanks for all the info!
@ David - It wouldn’t hurt to do so (passive income) and I hope you will succeed! Blog about your progress! :)
@ Fred - You’re most welcome! Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment!
