There are many people I know who are unhappy with their jobs. I was one of them too.

Conversations were always about work and how terrible their jobs were. They wanted to find new ones to be happy.

Most of them, after a change of jobs, were still unhappy. That usually set in about 3 months or so into the new job. I was also one of them.

The cycle then repeats itself, in most cases. And these were all people in highly paid jobs.

The truth is, chances are high they would never be happy, because they are always looking for the perfect job. In fact, while they might not necessarily dislike the nature of the work they are doing (e.g. IT, accounting etc), they certainly do not like it either. They are not passionate about it. They do it for that monthly sustenance paycheck, or for the money.

And because they previously went into that particular industry believing that was where the money was, and where the future of the world laid. Not whether they were interested in the industry in the first place.

I see the same signs whenever I attend a workshop or seminar about Internet Marketing. Of course, Internet Marketers, being marketers, always wax lyrical about how the industry have made them untold riches, and how it can easily be achieved by everyone. They need to do that to draw people’s attention, to make money.

What disturbs me each time is not the marketing hype (I think it is generally unavoidable), but people jumping onto the bandwagon without carefully evaluating if the industry suits them. Internet Marketing is just like any other job - a lot of effort has to be put into the marketing, advertising, product creation, networking, follow-ups and much more. Yes, many of us have the flexibility of schedule, but if you also study the better known Marketers, you would know rewards do not come instantly. Even more so, to continue receiving these rewards requires greater sustained effort. Ewen Chia, widely recognised as one of the world’s top Affiliate Marketers, took years to reach where he is now, for example.

Often, I hear questions like “How much time do I need to put in each day to make X amount of money?”, “Oh, setting up an opt-in list is so tedious and complicated!” or “Registering for a domain name is so complicated! I do not know how to use a mouse, much less a computer!”. Unfortunately, money does not come easy (even lottery winners have to pay for their tickets). If you wish to make money online, do not ask how much effort is required, or complain about how complicated setting up a website is. Ask how it can be done. And if you do not have the technical ability, time or patience, find out how much it takes to outsource it. And if that is beyond your resources, ask yourself again if you really want to make money online.

It is all well and good for anyone to want to make money. Just about everyone does! But, at the risk of putting people off the idea of making their fortune online (you know I don’t mean that - I really want everyone to be able to do so), ask yourself if you would enjoy making money online. There are numerous ways to make money, and while the Internet Marketing industry is a huge and growing one, it is not the only goldmine available. Find one in which you will truly enjoy the process of harvesting your oilfields, because when passion is mixed with hard work, riches often follow, with greater joy.
