Nearly 2 weeks ago, Sarah of blueJAR.com started a massive blog contest with incredible prizes. Not only are there THREE cash prizes to be won, each winner will also get a 125×125 banner ad on her blog sidebar for A MONTH! This is great exposure on a blog which has grown considerably, with a wide readership.
The rules are easy - write a post on your blog about any topic in a “How-to” format. The subject matter can be any topic but it is advisable that you keep it to your blog niche. The judging process kicks ass too, with all contest participants getting to pick their top 3 choices. Is that simple or what? The contest ends on 18th September, so go to blueJAR.com now to find out more!
Marketing is Everything
So this is a statement which most of you have heard of. Some might dispute this, but at the end of the day, you might have the best product, content or service, but without telling the world about it in some way, it would still be sitting in a corner of your room gathering dust. You need to be able to market to make money.
Marketing can be done or provided at many levels, by all involved in the process of creating that product. As an Internet Marketer, you either have your own or are selling someone else’s ebook, software, blog, course - you get the idea. So, how do you become an Internet Marketing Rock Star, the shining light in the huge Internet arena, who grabs everyone’s attention with a single email or web page? And how can you do it and have fun at the same time?
Here are some straight-hows:
1. Be positive with just about everything
Extolling the virtues of anything can help immensely when you need to wax lyrical about what you are selling. So create the mindset to see the good, even from the bad.
2. Be friendly and build relationships
Saying “Hi!” to people with a smile and asking how they are does not take much effort. People love it when you are interested in their lives. Marketing is also about creating relationships with people as well, and building that bond and trust invariably helps in selling the ideas that you have.
3. Know your products!
Many Internet Marketers plainly regurgitate whatever they have been told. Spend some time really learning about what you are selling - there could be extra gems in the products that no one picked up on, but you can surely build on these. Know your products’ uniqueness.
4. Know your competition
This goes without saying. Not necessarily to beat them, but to join them if possible! Keep your eyes peeled for any hidden opportunities in every situation - partnerships abound and marketing potential can increase ten-fold from these.
5. Brand yourself and your products
If you can be unique in your clients’ eyes, naturally it will be more advantageous for them to buy from you.
6. Networking and Masterminding
Get to know like-minded people with the right mindsets. Spend time building relationships with them. Brainstorming together will lead to more ideas.
7. Learn, copy, apply
The Japanese have done it with much success. Why not you?
8. Know your clients
I have often said how important it is to know and understand your clients’ needs. When you know what they need, you know what solutions and how to market to them.
9. Build credibility
If you want long-lasting results in marketing, you need to build credibility. By making sure you do the above, you will come across as someone who knows what he is talking about, has results to show for it, and is trustworthy. Anything you say begins to carry more weight in the clients’ eyes. In fact, marketing new products and services becomes easier when you have credibility.
10. Help others achieve marketing success
Not only do you actually practise the concept of giving more to receive more, this will build your own portfolio of marketing case studies. If you help others achieve marketing success, you will naturally be known as a guru.
Adopting some, if not all, of the above can lead you to much success and profit as an Internet Marketer. But they sound like hard work! And they are boring! Surely there must be more? The below methods, while not for everyone, have been proven to work. In fact, when done right, it can push you right to the top of the Internet Marketing heap! However, some might shy away from these grey hat methods. To me, it is always a case of finding out what works best for you without compromising (too much) on integrity.
a. Associate with the best
Say you are a blogger requiring (faster and) more exposure. There are many ways to do this. You can enter into partnerships, deals or simply sucking up to bigger, more established bloggers. Even leaving lots of (useful) comments on blogs can provide a platform for this.
b. Be controversial
You want to be a Rock Star? Do what Rock Stars do for marketability! Say or do something controversial. Create a buzz surrounding what you are or will be doing. To get noticed you have to thrust yourself into the limelight. 50 Cent caused a stir in the Rap world when he recently announced that he would retire if his new album did not outperform Kanye West’s latest in sales. This led to better Rap album sales so far this year compared to the dire numbers in 2006. Which leads me to the next…
c. Demand attention!
Goes right back to the grand old saying that you might have the next best thing to sliced bread, but if nobody knows about it, you ain’t gonna make a dime off it. The fastest way is to become an attention-junkie. So what if some frown on this? John Chow is widely known as a Google whore, but look where he is today. =) Be visible!
d. Proclaim yourself an expert
Everyone loves an expert. Everyone listens to an expert. Of course, if you choose this method, be sure that you have done your homework at least. Know your products and your niche. Still, even if you do not and get found out for it, sometimes the negative publicity can actually generate more results.
e. Create an aura about you
A friend of mine wanted to be known as a dating guru and he wanted a visual way to represent this, other than using his own little personal photo collection. Cue a night out at the hottest club in town, and asking the hottest girls to have a picture taken with him for $5 each. Next thing you know, they are shown to his clients and they hang on every word of his.
e. Grow that thick skin
To do all the above, you need to have a hide so thick that any publicity or negativity generated would stroke your marketing fires further and leave you hungry for more.
There are many more ways to spice up your marketing abilities and reach, and some border on sneaky and shady. While such methods can bring quick results, nothing brings more lasting and permanent results than an Internet Marketer who knows his niche, builds trusting relationships, networks often and absolutely, really cares for his clients well-being, satisfaction and needs.
Again, do join in blueJAR.com’s “How-To” Group Writing Project contest and stand to win great cash prizes and maximum banner exposure on an exciting and popular blog! Find out more here.

1Thank you for participating in my group writing project!
“Grow that thick skin” has got to be what I’ve learned the most over the past 2 months while blogging. Hopefully our skins don’t get too thick but thick enough to stay strong!

@ Shaun - I am learning with everyone :) I have done event marketing in the past with a friend for dance parties etc so what little I do know have been bred in the trenches. Thanks for the stumble! And yes I hope one of us wins - it’d probably be me tho’. ;)

12@ MDB - Thanks for your comment! :) Absolutely pivotal - but many still make the same mistakes of not knowing their products well enough and when they get queries, often face difficulties in answering with any belief.

18YC, as a former (re-formed?) engineer, #7 rings so true. I called it copying with pride. If someone else does something well, and it works, there’s no need to reinvent it.

19@ Steve - And if it really needs changing, it would really be to serve a need, so there is no harm in copying in the first place. It can be a building block! Thanks for commenting, Steve!
