A great way to make money online is to write articles that can then be sold and published. Doing so will increase your visibility and marketability as a writer, contributing to other areas like article marketing. Other advantages include creating backlinks and traffic generation for your sites through your popular articles.
So, what can you do to become a better writer, and in turn get published more? What are the steps you can ensure to boost the popularity and readability of your articles?
1. Inject your personality into your writing
Nothing is more boring than to read something which is cold, faceless and out of the pages of your physics textbook. By injecting your personality into the article, it will bring more life to your words and make them jump out from pages, while readers will be able to identify your writing from others’.
2. Sprinkle dashes of humour
This might not come easy for serious individuals, but even dry sarcastic wit can bring a smile to anyone’s face. Take note not to overdo it though, as you want to be taken seriously for your writing abilities without coming across as a clown.
3. Read, read, read
If you want to write well and a lot, you need to know much more on your area of focus and even beyond. That can only come from reading relentlessly. Spend at least half an hour a day reading. It could be anything - a book, the day’s papers, a magazine or your favourite blogs. When reading, pick up new ideas, and write about them. Read more, learn more, and you will write better. Can’t set out the 30 minutes a day to do so? How about in the bathroom, on the subway, or while having lunch? There is simply no excuse for not having any time to read.
4. Practise writing daily
Studies have shown since humans came into being, that to get better at something, you have to keep doing it repeatedly. Case in point - most bloggers started out without a clue, but those who stuck at it and wrote regularly are the ones still around in the blogosphere. They are also the bloggers who get read frequently. Doing so will also help you develop your own writing style.
5. Write widely
Unless you are a fiction author, otherwise it is a good idea to get out of your niche once in a while and try your pen at other areas. Why do this? To prevent yourself from getting into a rut, writing-wise. If I were to blog about blogging everyday, I might start rehashing the same content subconsciously. But if I were to step out of my comfort zone and try blogging about how your sex life could be improved by setting out to sea, new ideas might surface while doing that, and I might even develop a fresh style.
6. Play Scrabble
Or word puzzles! There is no more enjoyable and fun way to practise -and- improve your vocabulary. A good vocabulary can spice up an otherwise normal article. I sometimes get all buzzy just from reading a powerfully-worded written piece.
7. Do not fear, send out your articles
To get people to notice your articles and make money from them, you first have to get published. Unfortunately this usually means having to peddle your goods for free. One tip is to actually send out some of your best articles for free submission to article directories such as EzineArticles.com and ArticlesBase.com. Millions of eyes peruse these sites everyday and the exposure provided can do wonders for your portfolio when you actually try to sell your other articles. From the popularity and ratings provided by readers, you will also know what you write best, and the styles that can attract more readers. These inputs can go into perfecting your writing style.
There are, of course, a myriad of ways to write better, but the above-mentioned are what I practise regularly, and believe to be the essentials for developing an individual style that will get your articles published more and in turn, widely-read. So get on it and pick up that pen!

1Excellent post YC. I haven’t tried the Ezines and Articlebase yet, but will keep those in mind. I think all those tips you say work. I know from experience. I do the first 5 tips for sure. I haven’t played scrabble in awhile but I have a computer game that is similar and made for one person to play.
By the way, Congratulations on your Technorati ranking. You have done an amazing job in a short period of time. It’s like you are driving a technorati ferrari. ;)

2I’ve tried ezine articles, i submitted 5 posts to them, got about 10 visitors from those posts, and I don’t know how high of quality the backlink I got was either. I wouldn’t try them out again. Great post man!!!! :)
Cheers

3All very good points. I think # 7 is important. Some bloggers don’t make the effort to get their writing out and in front of people. Those who are aggressive will benefit from the opportunities.

4All great tips on writing the article YC but remember that the idea of writing articles is to get backlink and traffic so the resource box and title is the most important part to get them clicking.
I recently wrote a post about Bum Marketing as well, I will link to you since you wrote on how to write the body more meticulous :-)
Take care, Sean.

6Awesome post, everything is One-Hundred Percent correct! Let me tell you about the 30 minutes of reading a day. My father made me read a short story in your elementary English book a day. I must admit the determination he had to push me has developed my reading and writing capability tremendously. Whenever I write an article/post/email I extremely input my sense of humor, personality, and vocabulary as much as I can. One tip anyone should use is highlighting words you don’t understand in whatever form of reading you do.

7Tip #4 is one I haven’t exactly been putting in practise, as I don’t really write daily. But I’ve noticed some improvement in my writing as I started to write more often.
Tip #7 is one I’ve been neglecting for ages, but this is the second time today that I read a blog post about it. Could it be a signal? :-P
I’m a fiction author, so I know how important it is to leave your comfort zone and try different things, as stated in #3.

8All good tips!
I think point #5 is an interesting one I have not though of and will consider exploring. Thanks YC!

9It’s interesting how sometimes the most successful tips are actually quite basic. I, too, found tip #5 to catch my attention because I don’t really blog on a specific topic (well, besides me, if that counts, haha!), but writing on various subjects and more importantly…reading blogs from a wide range of niches has been very helpful in developing my own content-style as a newbie blogger. I think “writing widely” ironically works to help you find what you are good at writing, what you like to write about and in the end…what you will most often writing about. So, in a sense…it’s like writing widely to write better narrowly, LOLs.
A very good list!

10YC,
This is a dead set runner for the $50 in my competition. Have you considered entering? Loved your advice, spot on. I particular like your 1-5 points as I use them myself all the time.
I have been slack on the article submission site which is probably a mistake because of the missing backlinks.
Monika :-)

13@ Chessnoid - I think you are one of the bloggers I know who write the most about a wide variety of topics, a very good read if you ask me! Sometimes reading the same thing could be boring for readers too! :) My ranking isn’t that good really - I kinda expect it to slow down somewhat this month.
@ Shaun - One thing about article marketing is that you actually need to submit as many articles as possible. The backlinks will come with time. Usually the backlinks should generally be of decent quality although you can’t control the splogs from fishing your stuff as long as they follow the rules for publishers.
@ Steven - The problem I think most face is that they need to write and submit a lot. Blogging daily is already something that most people find hard to keep up with, much less writing 2-5 articles each day for submission. :)
@ Sean - Cheers for the link bro! Your article was fantastic - and you really spend quite a bit of time on article writing and submission - great to see you reaping the benefits - should strive to be like you :)
@ Alex - Thanks for the kind words! That’s a good way to improve and expand your vocabulary! I’ve always loved to read and write from young so I face less hangups about writing. I engage in a lot of “wroodling” like when I don’t necessary have anything in mind. :)
@ Karen - You don’t write daily but you have a really engaging style as well! Being a fiction author I think you’d also know the subtleties in that area which can be applied in blogging - I must read your blog often :)
@ ZHereford - With the varied interests that I have, I end up trying my hand at writing about them - and sometimes I try to study the styles and standards used as well- definitely helps!
@ Joanne - Your niche is so conducive to writing about anything that I now have the itch to have a ‘personal’ blog - then I can really write about everything and no one can complain. :)
@ Monika - You mean I can use this for the contest? :) I’d love to join - let’s see if I can come up with something better! I haven’t submitted as much as I’d have liked too - Sean just gave me a kick up my behind to spend more effort on it.
@ Heather - I thought of that because I have started recently to spend some time on Scrabble - it can be really addictive… :)

14Hmm… No.2 is quite interesting. I seldom insert humor into my post. I think I should do it for my blog’s health! :D
It’s kind of pale to see my blog having lots of serious things to talk. Thanks for the post. It inspired me a lot.

15Ken, you don’t have to insert humour on purpose - your blog has -a lot- of humour - it’s in the way you write and the expressions you use. Makes me smile often!
