I would like to start first by thanking Shaun (previously of ShaunLow.com fame) for being a fantastic gentleman by giving me his banner spot on blueJAR.com, a prize he won in said blog’s How-To Group Writing Project! I am very much speechless and grateful for his kind gesture and I believe I speak for many bloggers in saying that we hope to see Shaun back in the blogosphere soon. :)
This week saw the usual self-review posts from many blogs, going through their past month’s performances in terms of traffic and monetisation. As such, there are a couple of posts here that go into that area, although some with more focused research. There are also a few which provide further tips I believe would be useful for every blogger and Internet Marketer if they read carefully.
To kick things off in a positive and refreshing way, my good friend Chessnoid talks about how he is just happy to be blogging. I have recently found out that we have common interests (or so I believe - how about some of that crispy pata or bulalo, buddy?) and I have always found Chessnoid to be approachable and helpful. He chooses to see the positive in things and move on from there, and it is an attitude not often seen in an environment which sometimes reeks of cynicism and superficiality.
I recently came across Connected Internet via Ken’s site, and Everton shared his blog earnings for September 2007. If you thought John Chow was great, then look at this guy - certainly he might not be in the limelight as much, but those are some awesome numbers racked up there. Everton is commonly a name used for the poorer half of Merseyside football (soccer), but this Everton certainly belongs in a posh neighbourhood. ;)
Marko is a frequent visitor on my blog and he continues to learn and put into practise everything he picks up. He talks about how his music blog’s rankings shot up the roof on OnBlogList.com. Having some great goals for his blogs, and being a fellow metal fan, I wish him all the best and hope he achieves those goals! Little steps can go a long way.
Buying text links are now a common way many bloggers use in the hope to boost their Page Rank and also more popularly, to increase their site’s exposure on the Internet. The most visible text link brokering service Text Link Ads is seen even more often and a oft-used method to monetise blogs as well. Ian Fernando discusses his final results using TLA to gather traffic and boost his site rankings, but with some surprisingly results.
One of the best articles I have seen recently is Maki’s Radiohead’s In Rainbows: A Look at Anti-Marketing in the Music Industry. I know everyone reads Dosh Dosh but this deserves to be read by all, on one of my favourite topics (marketing) and in an industry which I have dealt with (music).
One of my goals this month is to increase my blog’s RSS subscription. Chris gave me a heads up on a massive list of over 50 RSS directories to submit my feed to. I believe it would be useful for anyone and will certainly be one of the methods I will be testing for this month.
If you are looking to change your Wordpress blog theme, Bryan of OneMansGoal has come up with an impressive list of 51 great places to find these themes. Be careful though - you might end up spending a whole week just going through and testing them!
Sean of WarriorBlog has often caught my eye with his direct, no-nonsense, straight-talking, take-no-prisoners articles and comments. He came up with another winner this week - both tongue-in-cheek but with certain head-nodding clarity, he tells you 10 reasons why his blog is better than yours. There is a consolation for us though - we probably count better than him!
Finally, an off-topic post which certainly brings back many fond memories. I have always loved visiting Seoul, South Korea, and Korean food and culture rank among my favourite things to talk about. After racking up 5 visits in just over 2 years, I felt something missing when I did not have the chance to drop by this year. Reading Gdog’s The Daily Kimchi and his post on You Know When You’re In Seoul When… brought back some fun memories of my time there.
Alright, so I’m off to enjoy my weekend! Other than watching the Cubs falling to the curse again, it will be the usual soccer weekend. I am also eagerly anticipating Megadeth’s first ever concert in Singapore in 2 weeks’ time. As a gift to all my readers, I leave you with a live video clip of a Megadeth classic - Hangar 18. You can also learn a lot about natural marketing from this band, if you know their history. ;)
