I have always enjoyed extreme sports like snowboard, wakeboarding, skateboarding and just about anything that requires a long piece of wood.
But after suffering a torn disc of the spine, I had to forgo any hopes of ever stepping up and doing 360s in the Swiss Alps or something like this:
It was a nice sunny Sunday afternoon out at the Bedok Reservoir (Singapore) for the Wakeboard World Cup series. The early morning shower threatened to derail the competition but the blazing sun came out just before lunch and all went well. I had a great time getting sunburnt and taking quite a number of photos of the action, but in the end decided to put up 2 short clips of Raimi Merritt, the 14 year old women’s wakeboard champion from the US, during her semi-final heats. Apologies for the poor resolution and sound - it was just me and my trusty little Casio digicam.
There were supposedly free goodie bags for the first 1000 spectators each day, but it seemed like there was a neverending supply. Or it never reached that many. Whatever it was, I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves with the free banana boat rides and great looking chicken chops:

I did not stay till the end, due to the water marshals asking me to leave for having too many banana boat rides. So if you would like to find out the final results, just go straight here tomorrow when it should be updated.
I had the necessary back surgery to remove the disc gel many years back, and since then have been relatively pain-free. But due to the seriousness of the injury, I was advised not to engage in any physical contact sports and all. Nowadays I stick to swimming and some light weights, but I do miss the strength training and soccer a great deal. I should take up tai-chi again, to reinforce the discipline in my exercise regime and diet.
I hope everyone had a great weekend - did you do anything special?
